Love Sees Faces
Genuine love sees faces,not a mass…
- George Buttrick, Prayer
“As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.” 1 Samuel 12:23 (NIV)
“I spelled out your character in detail. To the men and women you gave me. They were yours in the first place; Then you gave them to me, And they have now done what you said. They know now, beyond the shadow of a doubt, That everything you gave me is firsthand from you, For the message you gave me, I gave them; And they took it, and were convinced That I came from you. They believed that you sent me. I pray for them.” John 17:6-10 (MSG)
I am sure that in both of these farewell passages, Samuel and Jesus saw faces. Samuel had lived a long life, over 100 years. He had lived in the temple from a young age. I am certain he knew the patterns and habits of the people, coming and going. There were many feasts, dinners, and other gatherings in his lifetime. He had been a leader in Israel for decades and knew people.
Jesus spent 3 years with the 12 disciples doing everything together. He knew them well; their personalities, idiosyncrasies, and their faces.
As part of prayer, interceding for others, let’s see faces and live out genuine love for them.
